In 2017, we will be pledging monthly donations to Sea Shepherd Dive, Large Marine Vertebrate Project (LAMAVE) and Island Rescue Organization (IRO) Bohol, and ramping up our community projects with Dogs of Alona and Ocean Quest.
“Every time I slip into the ocean, it's like going home.”Sylvia Earle
Sierra Madre Divers was established in Bohol in 1996 by Laarni Lehtonen, one of the first female instructors in the Philippines. After over 20 years, we are still family owned and managed.
We have a wonderful team of instructors from eight countries, and that is just where they were born, not where they have lived. Our combined life experience and values come from a multitude of countries and cultures. We are proud of our Filipino roots and work hard daily to perfect the Filipino smile – It’s more fun in the Philippines!
We are committed to environmental best practices and conservation. We are a Sea Shepherd Dive partner, Green Fins accredited, and support marine research and local animal welfare with monthly sponsorships. We firmly believe in diving with a purpose, and offer a range of conservation events and courses for divers to become advocates for our ocean planet.
Discover the underwater world of Bohol with our experienced local dive guides, some of whom have been diving here for over ten years! We offer a full range of PADI courses from entry-level Open Water Diver to professional level Instructor training and IDC Staff Instructor internships.
See the school of jacks, turtles galore, and rich coral walls at Balicasag Island; or go slow and steady with the frogfish, nudibranchs and colourful reef life on the reefs fringing Panglao Island. Lucky punters might also see graceful whale sharks cruise past as they migrate across the Bohol Sea.
Did you know that five of the seven species of marine turtles worldwide can be found in the Philippines? Our enhanced AWARE Sea Turtle Distinctive Specialty course will teach you to view marine turtles in a whole new light and learn more about marine turtle conservation.
“For my PADI Divemaster course, I am so happy I chose Sierra Madre divers. It was everything I was hoping for, and more. I’m most impressed with Sierra Madre’s commitment to being responsible stewards and ambassadors, not only of the local dive sites around Alona and Balicasag, but also to being ambassadors of the ocean in general.”
“Not only have I become a Rescue diver, I was having such a great time I completed 4 courses instead of my planned 2, I met some wonderful people who are passionate about the ocean, life in general, and made some solid friendships into the bargain… It’s true what they say; “It’s more fun in the Philippines!” In case you haven’t guessed, I will be going back. ”
“The reefs where we trained were beautiful! We saw a tonne of fish. It was beautiful… I would definitely recommend doing PADI courses here, great people, great health and safety (which worried me about diving in the Philippines) and a beautiful location. Also they care about the environment and marine life which is important!!”
