The methodology introduced by Ocean Quest is a result of their own research and is incorporated in the Ocean Quest educational systems. By adhering to their belief that their last student is their best student, we continually achieve highest program standards. Their courses are well thought-through, considering every factor of participant safety as well as lowest impact to the environment. Materials for their courses are written and compiled by their experts without duplication of other coral education systems. Ocean Quest have also established progression of training for coral propagation so the public can begin from the most simplest and progressively attain complex knowledge and skills.

Coral propagation workshop

The 1-day coral gardening workshop is an introductory level training program that teaches participants proper Coral Propagation techniques, basically a hands-on trial of coral propagation techniques itself. The course theory is purposely made into simplified education suitable for any educational background, allowing for anyone to be able to aid in conservation. The intention of this course is to educate the public in coral propagation for the purpose of broad scale coral restoration. By increasing community knowledge about coral propagation, it is possible to make large scale coral restoration possible and in a systematic manner.

Pre-requisites:

  1. Minimum age of 10
  2. Non-divers can participate in the workshop on shore
  3. Diving certification is an advantage, but diving skills must be evaluated before working in the nursery

  6. Coral Propagation Methods & Techniques

Ultimately, you will learn about coral species, how they are formed, how they reproduce, and their importance to the ocean and all other life on earth. You will also learn the difference of healthy versus sick coral both through theory in the classroom and diving our reef. Further, you’ll receive a demonstration on proper coral propagation techniques, from retrieving it from the reef, fragging and propagating it, to placing it back into the ocean. You’ll learn the benefits of Ocean Quest’s natural methodology, why we do it this way and the reasoning behind how this method is self-sustainable. After completion of the course, you will be a certified coral gardener, able to assist in coral propagation at any of our Sea Shepherd Dive affiliates worldwide and able to enroll in the next step of our Coral Propagation Trainer Course.

This course includes 3 dives:
